What to Look for in a High-Quality Cargo Trailer

Just about any cargo trailer you buy will work for a while. But if you want a cargo trailer that will last, you need to spend some time doing your research. If you're looking to buy a used trailer, remember that even the best name-brand trailers must be maintained well.

For example, if you come across some used Diamond cargo trailers in Orlando, Florida, if the owner didn’t take care of them, they could still be in a state of disrepair. Always get an inspection first!

So what qualities should you be looking for when shopping for new or used trailers in Orlando, Florida?

Steel vs. Aluminum

The materials used to make your trailer greatly impact long-term usability. Steel is an excellent material for many applications, including trailers. Steel frames offer more rigidity and are less prone to cracking. Aluminum frames are lighter weight and more resistant to corrosion from salt exposure, but arguably less durable.

Exterior Panel Thickness

Standard exterior panels are .024” thick aluminum, and typically adequate for general duty uses. For commercial use applications, look for trailers with thicker exterior paneling like .030” or even .080” multi-layer panels. This will add rigidity to the trailer and reduce flexing that can fatigue joints.

Stud Spacing

Just like a house, you want to look for 16” stud spacing in the walls. That’s not to say that 24” spacing is no good; it’s just not as rigid. If you’re not sure what the spacing is in a trailer, ask the seller. If you’re looking at the trailer in person, bring a tape measure to make sure. You don’t want the walls to flex on you while you’re towing the trailer!

Plywood Interior

The interiors should be made of plywood, NOT particle board. Plywood is much stiffer and stronger and resists moisture far better. Particle board is cheaper in every way. It will degrade quickly, especially if there are leaks. Look for plywood floors, walls, and doors that are between ⅜” and ¾” inch thick.

Roof Quality

A leak-free, well-made roof is essential. Chances are that you’re getting an enclosed trailer specifically to keep the rain out. The roof should be one piece and wrap down the sidewalls at least a little.

Durable Components

The axles, wheels, hinges, and everything else should be made to last! You don’t want to replace these parts constantly, or worse, experiencing a failure while towing.
